A man sits on a bench by the side of the road. Someone walks past and starts beating him up. His arm is broken and he’s screaming in pain. A psychiatrist walks past and sees what’s happening. He says, “there’s something wrong with you. That’s why you’re in pain. I’ve seen research studies which clearly demonstrate that there’s a difference in brain activity between those who are being beaten up and have had their arm broken compared to those who aren’t in excruciating pain. This means you have a mental illness. That’s why you’re in pain”. He walks off and the beating continues. Then a government minister walks past. The minister says, “the psychiatrist told me you have a mental illness so there’s something wrong with your brain. That’s why you’re suffering. I see nothing wrong here”. So the beating continues and the victim’s leg is broken. Then a policeman walks past and sees what’s happening. He say, “the psychiatrist and the minister told me you have a mental illness. That’s why you’re in pain. And that’s what the law also says. I see no injustice here”. The policeman walks off and the victim’s beating continues. The victim’s other leg is broken. Then a psychological therapist walks past and sees what’s happening. They say, “stay positive. It can better”. What’s wrong with the idea of mental health and mental illness? This story I’ve told I hope explains one of the major problems and obstacles to the truth which the belief in psychiatry obscures.
